They gave their tomorrow for our today

11 Nov

A friend of mine told me a story about his father who served in World War II and I thought I would share it with you.   Take a few moments today and remember all those who gave their tomorrow for our today.

“Thank you, Brian, for posting this important reminder.
It resonates with me deeply.

May I take a moment to tell you why?

My father served aboard the HMCS Warrior in World War II. He owned an authentic Hohner chromatic harmonica that he used to entertain his dobey mates.

One day, when Dad was assigned to sounding, the Japanese sank the Warrior’s sister ship. Dad could hear the sailors’ screams as the ship went down. There were no survivors.

The Warrior survived the encounter, but Dad was so shook up by the experience, he started playing Gospel hymns on his harmonica to console himself. It was his only solace.

The commander of the ship got wind of this. The next thing you know, Dad was being asked to play ‘Surely Goodness & Mercy’ to the entire ship’s complement.

A retired naval officer confirmed this story at my father’s memorial service in Burlington, Ontario.

You know, Brian…..

Dad seldom brought up the subject of his years of naval service, or about the war, during his living years.

And it dawned on me…..

In that moment, in that funeral home in Burlington…..

That there was a whole side to my father that I had never known…..

Because he never elaborated on it.

That he was estranged from my mother, my sister & I for so many years is only part of the reason, I think.

I wonder how many other war veterans’ offspring have experienced something similar.

<contemplative sigh>

A new Journey

14 Sep

This week I started my practicum for school.  Being one of the last major hurdles to the completion of school, it was a great feeling to finally get here.  Since I last wrote I have went from thinking about moving to Vancouver for a job I had dreamed for a few years back, moving to Halifax, working at a university, joining a Disney cruise ship, and packing up shop and heading to Saskatchewan.  Let’s just say the pondering this summer had a lot of options which were very seriously weighed.

I ended up choosing a local organization to hang my hat for the next while.  It was a very exciting process to get to that decision.  There was a bunch of waiting, a lot of negotiating to make various arrangements and some just good soul searching conversations.

So I started this week actually using the skills I have been learning and developing through school for the last 5 years.  It was rather exciting but also opened up my eyes a lot.  I realized quite quickly I do have natural talent and a strong foundation of knowledge but like a gem buried within stone I am going to need a fair bit of polishing and smoothing of the rough edges to grow to my potential.  After my initial consultation I felt very comfortable that I will be molded in to a career development practitioner / job developer as long as I trust the process and learn from the opportunity.

Anyways here’s to new adventures and discovering abilities I didn’t know I had.

Vancouver anyone?

14 Jun

So a few months ago I started an interesting little journey.  I had been looking for a change in life and found an opportunity that I thought why not see what will come from this.  I applied for a role that I thought sounded interesting.

Well through a series of events of conversations I came across some serious discussion on an opportunity that would have been my ideal situation about 5 years ago.  It involved working in Vancouver and overseeing a number of retail departments in a fairly large area.

Needless to say after much thought I decided to not pursue it.  It was an interesting decision to decide to not go after something that would have been rather exciting.  The reality was that I decided a while a go that I was going to pursue another career.  My buddy Daryl gave me some good advice while I was thinking it over.  He said “In all the stories you read and see on movies how often does the main character be presented with a choice to pursue something really interesting versus what it is they truly dream of”.   I felt good about turning away something really good to continue on with a path I started many years ago.  I was telling this story to my friend Ruth the other day and she was saying that it took something to walk away from a wide open door and have no other doors present.  Ironically enough a couple of days after I did have a few more doors open.  I will share more on this in a few weeks.

The point of this whole story reminded me a lot of the purpose of chasingdreams.  To determine a dream that you have for your life and then pursue it with a determination to achieve it is not an easy thing to do.

So tell me about yourself…

28 Feb

For school we had to write a brief personal marketing statement we would use to introduce our selves to prospective employers and a 90 second “elevator speech”  that we would use to sell our selves.  This is what I came up with.  Work in progress but I like the direction it is going.  What would you say to someone as introduction or if you had 90 seconds to catch their interest.

Marketing Statement: I help people take the steps to pursue their career dreams.  I help organizations align their reality to their vision.

90 seconds:

I am a Change Consultant.  I help people take the steps to pursue their career dreams.  I also help organizations align their reality to their vision.  This is accomplished through pursuing excellence over the status quo.  I draw from both my human resources and career development training in this process.  After caringly listening to where you want to go, I help you craft the steps from here to there.  It is always my privilege to watch as you make a difference in your world and the world of those around you.

Hello … is dad there …

21 Feb

It has become for let’s say lack of a better word a tradition when ever I start a phone call home like this the assumption is it revolves around the state of my car.  Lets just say I have a lot of stories about my car breaking down at the side of the road.

Like….

The time the muffler fell off the Trans Am on the 401 near the Woodstock service centre

The time the piston went through the engine block on the New Yorker on the 401 near the Woodstock service centre

The time the brakes went on the Park Ave

The time the master cylinder went on the Trans Am

The time the steering axle broke on the Caravan at New Years 2011

The driver’s seat on the Trans Am

The time the Park Ave ended up in a ditch and took a few hours of drying out after it got pulled out

The nail in the tire of the Trans Am

The leak in the gas tank on the Park Ave, Trans Am, and Caravan

The getting the Trans Am fit to drive when the New Yorker died

The safety on the Caravan

The water pump on the Monte Carlo

The speedometer on the Trans Am

The alternator on the Trans Am

The electrical fire on the Trans Am

The water pump on the LTD

The muffler falling off the Caravan

The ignition on the Caravan

The frame on the Trans Am

and of course most recently (last night) the belt falling off the Caravan which caused the power steering, alternator, water pump all to stop work at 3 AM.

I am most certainly missing a few things in this list which is only the last 5 years.  Anyways the point of this post is that with out fail my dad has always come to my rescue with my many car phone calls.   Now I admit my beloved Trans Am has caused the most head aches of all my vehicles.  However I have always appreciated  learning how to fix it from my dad.

So yeah maybe some day I will buy a car that has warranty and doesn’t break down at the most odd times.  But then again the time fixing my cars is also a good thing.

Finding Employment Survey

15 Feb

This week for class we are suppose to ask people we know about the manner they have searched for employment.  I will post the compiled results of the survey next week.

1.      What do you think are the best methods for finding work?

2.      What methods do you think most people use?

3.      How have you actually found work in the past?

Well it has been a year since I set out to accomplish a life dream. The dream had several parts 1) see Vancouver 2) experience the Olympic Games 3) publish a book 4) inspire others to pursue their own dreams. I feel that this dream was fulfilled.

I do count myself fortunate because the reality is not everyone is able to say they accomplished a bucket list item. I have been pondering over this the last little while. What is it that holds us back from accomplishing what we are meant to do. I am one who believes everyone is created with a purpose for their life to fulfill. That purpose is probably something much larger then simply them self.

To me Vancouver was just a stepping stone for much bigger things.  One of my greatest passions is encouraging people to take chances and pursue something bigger then themselves.  Even today I was talking to a co worker about what is it they would truly want to do if they were given the chance.  It is rather cool because they got really quite and said “Now this is going to sound odd and please don’t laugh but …” and then proceeded to tell me about something really wanted to do.  I don’t know how many times you have been privileged to be apart of those conversations but when you are take the moment to listen to that persons heart and connect with their very soul.  It is something special.  I would recommend to encourage them.  Did you know that encourage means to inspire courage.  Maybe all that person needs to become the amazing person they truly are is some one to say “Hell yes you can do it”, “I believe in you”, or my favorite “Don’t stop believing”.

I have been reworking on my big dreams and what is the “why” in my own life.  I attended a great conference put on by HRPA that truly did reawaken my very soul in away I haven’t experienced that magical time in Vancouver last year.  I am going to work through some of these ideas on here over the next while so feel free to read and talk with the random thoughts of a dreamer who has been reawakened.

Chase One of Those Life Dreams

Yeah I haven’t done it all or haven’t went the most direct route but the journey has been worth it. I must admit I have had some truly amazing things happen to that were not planned.

One of my favorite quotes from you over the past year was when I was talking about the volume of stuff that I had taken off my “bucket” list this past year and now what I was I to do. You said to me the point is to not have a bucket list of things that need to still be done but that you actually lived your life to the fullest. Speaking of marking things off a bucket list you never know when a chance may present it’s self that will leading to something amazing. You can be having a conversation at like 2 in the morning in a restaurant parking lot and make a life altering decision to go for it, chase one of those life dreams, and never look back.

Top 10 of 2010 #9

22 Dec

Well I thought I would count down the top ten events in my 2010.  This will be in no particular order and there maybe a few days when there is more then one event. With that here we go ….

#9 Blogging, ISBNs, News Papers

Defintely one of the highlights this year was Blogging.  Now I am the first to admit that it only really happened for the month of February but there were other moments through out the year.  It really was fun writing during the games and having people follow my happenings.

ISBN the whole process of getting an ISBN number was a very stretching one to say the least.  I mean I checked every website I could and hit dead end after dead in.  Turns out you need to be a publisher to get an ISBN number.  Well if you fill out a 5 min government form you can become a publisher.  Well I am now a publisher.

I have always wanted to be a photographer for a newspapers.  I had the privilage of getting two photos in the local newspaper.  Both were of the Olympic Flame and one picture made the front page.

21 Dec

Well I thought I would count down the top ten events in my 2010.  This will be in no particular order and there maybe a few days when there is more then one event. With that here we go ….

#10 – Last Day of Studying Before the CHRP Knowledge Exam

It had been a long couple of weeks of studying.  The task was master all the material I had learned from Jan 2005- April 2009.  It had been one year since my last HR class.  Also to pay for the flight to Vancouver, I sold off my old textbooks.  I only had my notes to go from.  I spent many days rereading notes and then talking it out to make sure I mastered the material.  Had a few nice sits on the porch while studying as well.  The stakes were simple pass or rewrite in Oct for another $400. If you failed in Oct you were done unless you got a BA in HR.

Well after three weeks of intense studying I decided that it would be a better use of time the day before the exam to spend the afternoon golfing with Adam, Daryl and Steve.  I felt being loose was more important then a few more looks at the paper.  It was a fun afternoon. The longest round of 18 we had ever done probably.  Calling the club house to get the drink cart to come find us on the 5th hole was pretty epic.  Wagering with Adam in a skins game on the back nine was fun even though I lost on the last hole to give him a 5 – 4 victory.

Sidenote I passed the exam with a few points to spare.

Excrept from a School Assignment

08 Dec

For my one class, Job Development, I need to write a reflection paper on what I have learned over the semester and what it has meant to me. Anyways after writing some I realized it would be good for the blog.

How Previous Education Would Help in Future Role of Job Developer?

I decide about 6 years ago that I wanted to get in to career counseling. This was after some reflection after leaving Heritage College upon realizing the field of study I was studying there was not something I wanted to pursue anymore. I also had taken a MBTI test and career counseling was one of the “people with similar personalities” careers in the list. I conducted some research in to career counseling. I had found the Career Development Practioner program in a college catalogue and felt the education offered would provide me with the skills to move forward in desired path. Reading that it was a post graduate program and not really understand the admission process I decided to get another college certificate as my way to get accepted to the program. I choose the Human Resources Management program at Fanshawe. Along the way I realized the certification process for Canadian Human Resources Professional was changing quickly and dramatically and since I was so close anyways I thought I might as well go for it as well.
This slowed down my pursuit of the necessary skills I desired in Career Counseling, as I needed to finish off Labour Relations, HR Planning, Benefits and Payroll, and of course study for and write the CHRP knowledge exam. At the end of all this as I realized I could have taken a much more direct route through another program at Conestoga I kind of felt like I had wasted a lot of time with gaining my knowledge and way of thinking really from a Human Resources perspective. Well there was not too much I could do about it now so keep carrying on.
Anyways it wasn’t till I was sitting in my first afternoon in Job Development class this past September that the light bulb in my head just clicked on. I realized that as much as I had felt that the entire process of getting to this point had been kind of a waste of time it had actually prepared me quite well for a role in the career-counseling field. I didn’t have to work at how managers and human resources professionals thought and come up with ways to get inside their head because I had learned the same way of thinking. I could see very clearly how I would be able to help people and businesses benefit from each other. The skills I had developed interviewing, developing, and motivating employees could be used differently to help clients prepare for future employment. That constant looking for employees who could become some thing more with the right training and opportunities to further strengthen the company allowed me to know how to recognize what skills people had and how to present those to future employers.

The Made Up People in Your Life Part One

22 Nov

Have you ever thought about the people whom are an influence in your life.  They can shape your values, your beliefs, your thoughts, your motives, and ultimately the person you are.  I am blessed to have some wonderful people in my life who I call family and friends.  Maybe some day I will talk about those people.

Today I want to talk about “The Made Up People in Your Life”.  For the last little while I have been toying with this idea about doing a series on these type of people and the impact they have on us.  I do admit I watch way to many movies and have some TV shows that are can’t miss.  Anyways I started thinking about how to describe aspect of my character to relative strangers who have asked me to describe myself.  As I thought over it a few fictional characters came to mind who have traits which I admire and have adapted to my own life.  I wouldn’t say that they have completely influenced me but I do see some impact in my own life.  Also my various studies for school doing self assessments for career counseling tools, reflection papers on what I am learning and how it interacts with previous knowledge, and of course the current trends with in our world and their impacts on the world of work have lead me down a path of pondering myself.

So sit back relax and enjoy the show.  Great people such as Dr. Gregory House, Alan Shore, Rick Blaine, Jerry Maguire, and a few will be discussed and shown how they have been influences to me.

Refreshment for the Creative Soul

26 Oct

Tonight the St. Thomas Photo Guild was privileged to a very refreshing presentation by Phil Bell of Shutter Studios.

I must admit the feeling found tonight is a very familiar one.  The main reason I am a member of the St. Thomas Photo Guild is that by going to the meetings every other Tuesday evening I usually am able to steal a few moment where my soul feels truly alive and awake.  That is about the best way to describe it.  During the presentation of  amazing images, I usually feel a small flicker of life which wasn’t there before.  Maybe it is the creativity, maybe it is the exotic places, or maybe it is just knowing that photography is the medium for my artistic expression.

Painting with light is one way to describe photography.  Phil demonstrated the magic which is possible to the average mugal (sorry 24 days till Harry Potter so the references will grow from here on out) with the simple tools of a light source and a camera.  With practice, patience, a horse show in your camera bag, and a willingness to embrace the possibilities of what can be you too can create moments captured in time for all to experience.

So I would recommend take some time, soak in the visual splendor of Phil’s work, and perhaps have your soul refreshed in the process.

A New Day Has Come

25 Oct

I am excited for what will be happening for the next four years for the city of St. Thomas.  Tonight Heather Jackson-Chapman beame the mayor of our fair city.  She brings a refreshing vision for not just what the city is but what it can become.

For the Times They Are a Changin’

25 Oct

I will admit I have a few issues that I will gladly climb upon a soap box and argue till I am blue in the face.  Well in the interest of getting to my point earlier then my normal story telling style would allow here in lies the point of this message.

PLEASE GO AND VOTE

Having the right to vote is not something that most of the world does not have the privilege to do.  I am not qualified to speak to the conditions in the parts of  world were there is no process to be able to pick the individuals who represent you in the governance of your geographically area.  If any of my readers are please comment on this posting.

PLEASE GO AND VOTE

I know everyone has a busy life but you need to take the time to go and vote.  I know your crops need to be looked after in farmville or you need to see what everyone is doing on facebook, twitter.  I assume that with all those time restraints you can’t take 20 mins to go to the closest polling station and cast your vote.

PLEASE GO AND VOTE

Also I know that it not really possible to know who the candidates all are.  So might as well not vote because of that reason.  Fortunately most local papers have a brief bio on the candidates in your area (either in hard copy or online)

Here to make it easier here is a list of the bios for the Candidates in the City of St. Thomas.  This is in no particular order just the order I copied them from the St. Thomas Times Journal’s website.  For candidates that had no bios on the Times Journal I used the best I could find on google.  Also Ian’s City Scope had a lot of good info on the candidates as well.

I leave you with a quote from “Swing Vote” which I was watching while writing this piece.

All the world’s great civilizations have followed the same path. From bondage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy back to bondage. If we are to be the exception to history, then we must break the cycle, for those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

2020 Anyone?

22 Oct

Have you ever made a long term commitment.  It can be a little nerve racking some times or it can feel like the most natural thing in the world.

Think about it to say “I am going to stick with you” for the next 10 years” can be a very big step.  Hell that is longer then a 1/3 of my life.  It is longer then I have known some of my dearest friends.

Like I said making a long term commitment may also be the most natural thing in the world.  This is how it is for me.

So the renewal for chasingdreams.ca was due at the first of December.  It is amazing how quickly a year has flown by.  Really it has almost been 525,600 minutes since the concept of chasingdreams.ca was beginning to form in my mind.  I am the first to admit that other then an amazing month in February the website has not really been active.  There are great plans for what will come in the future.  Those will be revealed over the next while.  What I will reveal right now is that I have renewed  chasingdreams.ca for the next 10 years.   I can only imagine what mountain tops we will see and the places we will go during that time.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year

06 Sep

Well it’s that time again.  Labourday is over and so is the Jerry Lewis Telaphon for MS.  This can only mean it is the last day of summer and the first day of school is tomorrow.

I am excited for what tomorrow will hold.  I am excited about the places I will go.  For you see it is time to embrace new ideas, thoughts, and memories.  There is something to be said about the experience of becoming a better you by being stretched, molded and inspired by those precious gems of society called teachers.

The learning process is most definately a journey to not be under taken lightly.  You never really know where you will end up going.    The journey is not to an actually physical place but a place of understanding about yourself and others.  The task of learning a skill to be used, a nugget of insightful knowledge, and unknown abilities to be mastered is quite the thing to be strived for.

Last week, I made a bold decision to return to school full time this fall while working full time as well.  Growing tired of chasing my educational goals at the pace I have for the last few years I figured why not just jump in to it.  The plan has been in my head for several years of various paths to follow each building on the other.

I know school may not be for everyone but the joy of learning can be.  Find that thing that fires you deep within your soul and discover all you can about it through people, through books and through experiences.  And for those who are trying to make it to that first class tomorrow morning after the long summer days away just remeber that it will take you to some amazing places some day soon.

Anybody who ever built an empire, or changed the world

02 Sep

Anybody who ever built an empire, or changed the world, sat where you are now. And it’s *because* they sat there that they were able to do it.

This quote from “Up In The Air” has been bouncing around my head from the moment I heard it. Now I do admit the first time I saw this movie I was in a “honeymoon” state of mind which nothing would have not made me think (I was on a plane while watching it coming back from a month in Vancouver watching the Olympics, like I said honeymoon).

The other day I rewatched “Up in the Air” and that quote stood out again to me.  Think about that quote.  What empires or changes to the world are you destined to be a part of.  Thinking about the futrue prospects, dreams, or moments of 23 Secounds and how those circumstances you are currently experiencing will bring them about is a rather enlighting experience.

Reflecting on 2010 Resolutions

17 Aug

So today I started thinking about my 2010 Resolutions.  It started by wondering how have I been doing this year at accomplishing what I set out to do at the beginning.  With that being said here is my thought on how this year has looked so far in accomplishing my ideas and hopes.

Vancouver
Experience the Games to their fullest
Share those experiences through chasingdreams.ca, a book, and speaking engagements

Definitely experienced the games!!!  The blog was very successful.  I wrote the book which has been well received and has challenged many to find what they are meant to do for “23 Seconds” of their own lives.  I have had the privilege of speaking a few times about the trip in a formal settings as well have had my photos on display for the summer at the ST. Thomas Public Library

Pursue Thought Provoking Challenges
I want to end the year having grown through various challenges (no point in doing stuff I already can do) and be stretched in different manners of reflection and thought.  I think so on this one.  Will need the rest of the year to put the thoughts in to a better context.  Seen some intriguing sites, heard some inspiring stories, tasted some inviting wines.

Academically
Finish off Career Counseling program by taking last 2 courses Just Finished one signed up for last one to start in the fall
Write the CHRP exam Passed it in May First try
Enroll in the program (Adult Education BEd)at Brock in Sept Maybe January maybe pursue something different

Be in a position to buy a house in 2011 – This also could be move my van down by the river as well Well this one was rather bold but the goal of end of 2011 could be on the table

Find true love “This is true love – you think this happens every day?” – Westley
“Sonny, true love is the greatest thing, in the world-except for a nice MLT – mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe they’re so perky, I love that.” – Miracle Max

Continue in the process of maintaining a healthy life style and better mange a balance in life  I think I have found something closer to balance (at least improved from where it was at the end of 2009) Healthy life style, umm i think we are going to push this to 2011

Develop deeper relationships with the people in my life  I think I have been more intentional with prioritizing more time with people. This is a sliding scale which we all can always do much better at myself included.

Win my fantasy baseball league Sitting 3rd by using an odd strategy, shall see if I can gain the grown in the next 6 weeks and win it.  Did win hockey league though with the help of my buddy Anthony (oh yeah congrats to Anthony on getting married this past weekend)

Check off a few more ball parks off the list  Not this year but next for sure

See something breath taking Will wait to make a decision on this one.  Have a few candidates (and no not to run island) but want to see what the rest of the year has to offer.

and  Say What I Need to Say

I planned each charted course
Each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way

Yes there were times I’m sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out, I faced it all
And I stood tall and did it my way

(Ok so I am seeing a Rat Pack tribute band next week. I have always liked the Chairman of the Board and who else better to quote)

Plus whatever else I come with from here on out.
Carpe Diem

That thing you do

13 Aug

So I have been wrestling for several months with what is my best skill and how would I best describe it. I have established that I do have a very strong knowledge base to draw from such as my Human Resources training, my Career Coaching knowledge, my theological foundations (these would be my formal educations) as well as my experience in developing a customer base and several new services from the ground up over the last five years as a photolab manger.

The thing I have most identified as an attribute about myself is a complete unwillingness to settle for the “status quo”.  I don’t believe in making changes for change sake but I do feel that we are meant to strive to be the best versions of ourselves.  I was talking with my roommate Adam about this the other day and we came up with the idea that  I can be that supportive, encouraging person when it is needed or I can be the one who kicks you in the pants but it is my willingness to do what it takes to bring out the best in someone that is a great strength of mine.

With that being said I guess I am just trying to wrap my head around how to describe what it is that I am able to do well.  This would be the very heart of a consulting business I am exploring starting up.

What I need now is clarity on how to describe this to perspective clients.  Anyways as I try to figure out how I could use this skill to work in the context of my own consulting business I was wondering if you could tell me how you would describe what is my greatest strength.  I assume if you are a follower of chasingdreams.ca you know me well enough to add some input in to this thought process I am involved with so please do.
