Woooo hoooo!!!! I passed the National Knowledge Exam for my Canadian Human Resources Professional Certification. After 5 years of courses, studying, papers, reading texts books, group assignments and all that jazz, it is finally over or maybe just begun. Now I admit if I hadn’t sold all my text books so I could get to Vancouver, before I actually needed them to study for the exam I probably would have passed with more then 1% room for error. Either way I passed!!!!
It’s elementrary my dear Watson
Dave Thomas, Sir Richard Branson, The Wright Brothers, Walt Disney, Quentin Tarantino, Johnny Depp, Nicholas Cage, Jim Carrey, Christina Aguilera, John Travolta, Chris Rock, Tom Petty, Mary Kay Ash, Halle Berry, Michael Dell, Henry Ford, Bill Gates, Rachel Ray, John D. Rockefeller Sr., and Steven Spielberg.
So what do all these people have in common. I will get to that later.
Well I have been doing some thinking about my own dreams and what it will take to get to them. Currently I am a student working on getting some skills I think are important to make the next step in the process. I do believe that any time you have an opportunity to learn, be it in an academic setting or from the school of life you must embrace those moments.
A story that relates to where I am going with this. During “Return of the King” Arogon is told to set aside the ranger embrace his true self as King of Gondor. The role of king was both a right because of birth and also the time spent developing the necessary abilities to be king.
My wrestle really comes to the need to feel qualified through vast knowledge vs passion to accomplish some major tasks. Does anyone else wrestle with this one? The truth is everyone wrestles with the fear of the unknown. It’s funny I have been going through the photos I took at the games in preparation for a photo exhibit at the St. Thomas Public Library (which I am thrilled for) and I was flooded with so many great memories. From one little step of buying a one way ticket to Vancouver (which Adam reminded me scared me something fierce) has led to photos on the front page of the news paper, creation of my book 23 Seconds, to the photo exhibit. It only took the first step of actually moving forward on a crazy adventure. With all this said I am beginning to plan my next steps and let’s see what happens.
Oh what they have in common is that they either dropped out of high school or have no formal training in there chosen path just sheer desire.
Summer lovin’ had me a blast
You have to love those experiences reserved only for that great time of the year. Those experiences were you look forward to them all day at work. Those experiences that you can plan for weeks or just let happen spontaneously. Those experiences that you allow to linger and you talk about for several days after. I am of course talking about the process of having every meal prepared on the bbq.
I filled up the bbq 2 weeks ago. I think I have had 10 meals so far from it. I enjoy the fact that I can walk to Foodland and get something to throw on the bbq. So far the selection has included ribs, chicken, pork chops, veal, steaks, sausages, squirrel, and of course hamburgers. Anyways just wanted throw it out there bbq is the best way to make food. I am going to try and make Kraft Dinner at some point this summer. What is every one’s favorite bbq memory?
Hmm ok now what…
The last few weeks have been such a whirl wind. I had a friend email me the other day and ask do I every sleep.
Within the last few weeks I have accomplished a few major things on my “List” for 2010. First I wrote my CHRP (Canadian Human Resources Professional) exam. I have always seen this as a required step in the journey of my career. A few years ago, 2004, I decided I want to get in to Career Counseling. I found this really interesting program at Conestoga College that I want to take. I required some previous education so I decided having a foundational knowledge in HR would be of help in the future. Anyways after 10 courses spread over many nights of night school from 2005-2009 I accomplished all the courses needed to write the certification exam. I decided now was a good time to do it.
I began the studying process in about mid March. What can I say nothing like getting back from Vancouver and jumping in to a massive project. One down fall to this process was that I sold all my HR books to get to Vancouver (hey sacrifices needed to be made to accomplish that dream). This definitely made the studding process fun. As I went through my old notes I realized that the HR skills I have learned over the years are actually woven in to who I am. My ability to think strategically when it comes to managing the skills and abilities of people is something I don’t really think about at all. It felt good studying and realize I knew the content I was reviewing.
Secondly, I think I have become an author. Okay I am a little unsure of a what point you are able to call yourself an author. I wrote a book, published a book with an ISBN number, have it for sale in a retail location (107 Edward St., St. Thomas, Shoppers Drugmart) and sold at least 30 copies of the book. The point it all the work in creating the book has led me to a much funnier place of being able to talk about my creative work and hearing feed back from people who have bought it. Through out the process I just knew there were things that needed to be done to accomplish it and I did them. As I have been talking to other people I am beginning to realize that it is kind of a big deal to have written a book. Who knew?
23 Seconds: The Story of the creation of the book
What’s in a name?
That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.
Did I ever tell you the story behind the naming of chasingdreams.ca. I knew at the time I wanted to write a book about my olympic experiences and also wanted to write a blog to tell the story as it happened. After several weeks of thinking up some sort of creative name for the website, I turned on my play list of favorite inspirational songs to brain storm a site name. After listening for a while and not coming up with anything good, I looked at the play list name. I had previously made this list when planning my first attempt at a trip out west. Turns out I had named the play list Chasing Dreams. Well I looked up if the site was available with the “.ca” (being Canadian I did want the Canadian domain). And now you know the rest of the story.
The book is nearing completion. Text is ready, Pictures are 95% there, and the overall vision is being accomplished. A few last tweaks and I will be putting up the information on ordering, book signings, and all that jazz. The one little hang up is I have hit a wall with writer’s block. I can’t come up with a title for the book. I have a working subtitle “The Story of Chasing Dreams”. But I am lacking the actually title. I am rereading the blog and comment looking for a title.
So I thought I would throw it out there to see if any one has any ideas for a title for the book of my pictures and thoughts from the Winter Games? Any ideas please feel free to post them.
Sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.
You ever notice that when you go to a familiar restaurant you always order the same thing. You may have a few different things you order but you rarely explore the other options on the menu. I went out for dinner last night to a restaurant that has probably changed its name 7 times in 10 years. Even though it has changed several times the menu has always been the same. I wondered to my self a few weeks ago I was trying new foods when presented with the same old options of a burger and fries. It is amazing how you will just stay on the old worn path and not explore whole new worlds.
I followed up the dinner with going to the movies (which I have not done in some time) and seeing Alice in Wonderland. It was a delightful movie. I have always enjoyed the experience of “going” to a movie. Larger then life people, far off worlds, and sensing the energy that comes from other people’s laughter and tears. I am going to share a few insights from the movie and my past few weeks.
The main character struggles with an identity crisis are they “the” Alice. It is something that only they can answer and must find that answer from within. While I was at Vancouver I often struggled with the question when people asked “What do you do?”. I know it is just a way of making conversation and not meant to be a great philosophical idea but maybe it should be. Near the end of the trip I found the answer to that question. “I currently running a website called chasingdreams. Right now it talks about my dream of seeing the Olympics in Canada but soon it will become a place for others who want to chase their dreams to gain a helping hand and tell their stories”. I have for years had big dreams, as William Shanter said “Big Country, You Dream Big, you have to in a land that is the final frontier”, as much as the Games was one dream, the time away gave much needed time to work on other big dreams.
So over the last week I have started laying out the ground work to chase other dreams. Looking in to an accountant, booking doctors appointments, laying out the book design, speaking to Hillside’s youth group about the trip, were some of the little steps that will lead to much bigger steps. If nothing else I came away from watching Alice in Wonderland with skip in my feet and passion in my heart.
I mention in earlier posts that I had thought I had gone “mad” by planning the trip on the drop of a hat. Well….
Have I gone mad? – The Hatter, I’m afraid so. You’re entirely bonkers. But I’ll tell you a secret. All the best people are. – Alice
I am back …
Ok I am not sure if the “I am back …” title is for the fact I am back in St. T or that I have returned to the world of blogging.
It is amazing all the little things one most do after being away for 3.5 weeks. I had a stack of mail to go through which none of it was actually interesting just bills, blah. And things like having to go buy groceries and things like that.
Well in my on going attempt to stay in my Olympic mode I began the process of sorting through pictures. I may have taken 3000 while I was away and am now trying to get them down to fit in the sweet photo album Ashleigh my room mate painted for me for Christmas. I have 150 or so to go print and see how they look.
I also broke down and bought the “I Believe” cd because it will help with my withdrawal problem. I spent $8 for 3 songs all the same song just in French, English and instrumental. What can I say I miss the catchy song.
I probably should actually take my luggage out of the van and unpack it. That means though the trip is over. The memories will be there forever but the trip will be over. I was talking with Adam this morning and realize there is so many memories that I still have to process. Just telling him stories in stuff I know there are so many things I went through that I don’t even realize yet. Like honestly I met Gordie Howe. I saw Canada’s first gold be given out in person. I heard BNL, Greggory Charles, Burton Cummings, and George Canyon all with in at least 20 feet of me. I was 30 feet away from the flame from Greece. I walked in a rain forest. I saw a bobsled go by at 150km five feet away. I took photos at the Olympics that made it in the news paper and once was front page material. I run a publishing company which will be releasing it’s first book in a week or 2. I was in Robson Square when we won Gold in hockey. I had 457 different people from 15 countries follow chasingdreams.ca over the time of the games.
I followed a dream to it’s fullest and happy I did.
Golden Moments
So I have begun the process of sorting through the pictures I took. I may have taken over 3000 pictures over the last few weeks.
As I sort through them for the book I am publishing, I am going to post ones that I thinki people will like. Today is my last full day in Vancouver and then fly back to London for midnight your time tomorrow night. I am going to head out and do one more day of fun. Plus at some point I should pack and get my flight stuff ready.
Oh and thank you for all the birthday wishes yesterday on here and on Facebook. And if I feel older its only because of three weeks of living the Olympic dream. Side note living this dream actually has made me feel very refreshed and recharged. I am excited about whatever my next adventure is. I look forward to sharing more stories when I am back in St. T and keep on following chasingdreams.ca because this is only the begining of a life time of Chasing Dreams.
So you mean there is more to Vancouver then the games…
Well I decided today (and you are only as old as you feel) I better start doing the Vancouver thing. I did the olympic thing well, but really haven’t seen Vancouver.
I thought susepnsion bridge would be a good way to finish the last few days in Vancouver. I took a look at the top 10 book I bought months ago on Vancouver and turns out I have down alomost all of it just by the nature of my adventuring.
Any how
GOLDEN!!!
Fact before these games Canada won 39 Gold Medals going back to 1926 provided by Daryl. And yes we won none at Calgary and Montreal. Today we hold the Olympic Record of 14 in a single winter games. 25% of our gold over 84 years came in the last 2 weeks. Just wanted to put in to perspective how good our athletes have been these games.
Crosby Scores!!!! And Canada Wins GOLD

Taken a few secounds after the goal, I was too busy cheering and forgot I run a blog
DO YOU BELIEVE? What can I say but this was bloody amazing!!!!
I mean we WON GOLD in Vancouver. More Importantly I was in Robson Square in Vancouver and Crosby scores the winner in OT against the USA.
I am not even sure where to begin this tale. The important thing is that WE WON THE GOLD!!! By a process of elimination of venues I had watched Canada previously there was only one choice. I had done in Ontario Pavilion 200 feet from Canada Hockey Place, Molson Hockey House, Boston Pizza with a friend, Richmond Library, Outside of Ontario/Inside Ontario Pavilion, at home on the couch therefore there were only two options left inside Canada Hockey Place or outside a Robson Square. Lacking the $20,000 to get in the arena (and that seriously was a price from a scalper by the arena and that was cash only, who the heck has that in cash, seriously???) I decided to go for the heart of the party.
Now this wouldn’t be one of my cool stories if I didn’t some how upgrade my setup. Best way to describe it was people were trying to get seats on wet cement, this is what Robson square is. The first photo is of people trying to get near the screen at Robson Square. Any ways I am standing on the lowest step trying to see over people. I over heard the guy on his cell phone at the top of the steps with a wooden thing you can lean sit against talking about how his buddies were standing in line at a pub. He and his brother were debating if it would be better to watch the game at a pub or here. I encouraged them that the pub would be awesome and that they should leave me their news paper to sit on the wet cement steps with. I don’t know how good a pub is compared to Robson Square, I do know sitting on a newspaper vs standing on wet cement is a no brainier. And with that they took off to cut line and I was up one newspaper.
This all happened 1.5 hrs to game time. While I waited told the people about my trip and chasingdreams.ca. I got a flurry of text messages asking about where I was watching the game. At first I was wondering why is this spot the best, then when I saw several thousand people line up just to get in here I realized if I had taken 10 more mins to get here I would never have gotten this spot.
The game began. I was glad the Toews scored early so we could breath easily. Then Perry got one. Well this should be easy. Oppps gave 1 back no worries. Third period kinda wish they would try and pad the lead but we seem to be getting away with clearing the puck. 2 mins left the crowd is beginning to buzz. 1 min left we are getting read to roar. What the heck!!! (I am sure that is what I said) They scored!!! We are tied. How does a tie work. Okay 20 mins and then a shoot out.
Flashes of the World JRS came to mind. Pins and needles we will either be celebrating or I am in the heart of what will become a mob and riot very quickly. And come all the way to Vancouver and watch them lose that would be horrible. I tell the people beside me about buying my jersey from, Red Deer and having it Express Posted to where I am staying. It arrived in time for the Russian game. As cool as a Crosby jersey was the guy kinda disappeared on Friday and today. Ah well here we go over time.
I hate end to end hockey where 1 shot will end the game. Okay it is amazing hockey just my Leafs never condition me for what it feels like to win a close game I only know what it feels like to blow 3 goal leads. Who is going to be the hero, Nash, Thornton, Getzlaf, Toews, Perry, Iggy. Side note I have never heard 3000 people go from about to explode in celebration to dead silence as they did when the USA tied it up. That was a cool pass to Crosby, and Crosby Scores. HOLY COW I CAN’T BELIEVE IT. WE WON GOLD. THE ROAR WAS INTENSE. I just opted for screaming instead of using the cow bell. Hugging strangers, High fives all around, People grabbing me and yelling Crosby and pointing to the jersey I am now very glad to be wearing.
WE WON GOLD IN VAMCOUVER IN HOCKEY!!!! INSANE. Take to the streets because it is time to party like it is 1999. I thought the games had been intense. Ha I was so wrong. I litterly just went with the crowd because you were so packed in together you litteraly had no control of where you moved. It is an odd feeling having people so thick moving that you have no way to actually control where you are going. The cheering, the flag waving, the anthem be song, people saying to way to score that goal (at first I was like I didn’t do anything but after the first 10 it was just easier to celebrate as if I were Crosby and scored the goal) People coming up behind you say way to go Crosby as they pat you on the back, throw their arms around you and simply just cheer.
I would be interested in hearing other people’s stories of where they were when Sidney Crosby scored for Canada and won GOLD just 8 months after winning the Stanley Cup by beating the Americans in over time at the 2010 Games in Vancouver and how you celebrated after words. I heard from BJ that Legends was rocking pretty hard and Adam said the family farm was hopping well.
I believe in the power of You and I.
Competing at the Olympics
Have you ever thought what it takes to compete at the games and win a medal?
I have read you don’t win the fight in the ring under the lights, in front of the cheering crowd, and with the late push off the mat, but you win running in the rain early in the mornings, sweating in the grungy gym, and having no one there cheering you on.
The reality is no one won a medal here at the games. They won it through 4 years or more of hard work and training. I was so annoyed the other day when a commentator said that some one’s girlfriend winning gold would push them to win one of their own. Come on years of training is negated because of that. No way.
For myself the photography has pushed me to the edge of my skills. You have to go with what you practiced for years. The different lighting I have seen here are hockey arena nose bleed height, skating arena, curling rink, outside at night, fire at night, fire at day, buildings, portraits, landscape, concert stadium, sunny, overcast, rainy, in a plane, on a train, in a bus, bobsledding going by you at 150 km/hr, museum, self portrait, running to catch Gretzky, spots on your sensor, sunsets on oceans, aquariums, etc. My point is all of this took different skills to accomplish. I normal don’t cover such a variety. Today I had to remember how to freeze 150km/hr (push the shutter speed, allow the camera to go higher in ISO, and adjust the exposure metering). A lot of the time I only had a few moments if not secounds to set the camera up to catch the shot. Again all those camera club meetings, reading magazines, going out whenever I could to take pictures, and just tips and tricks from others prepared me for my Olympic moment (side note I am thrilled with this shot, I would say this alone would make the trip worth it).
I have been doing a lot of pondering about what is I want to accomplish and what dreams I want to pursue now. Evaluating priorities, and my daily routines. I realized the pace I was pushing in the fall was burning me out. It also was not really moving me in the directions I wanted to. So a few things I am going to do differently when I get home are in no particular order: start reading again – i have been working a way at a book while I have been out here which it has been a while since I have read for me, keep blogging – i rather enjoy my creative outlet to work through my thoughts even though I doubt my subject matter will be as cool as the games like i said I enjoy it, work on taking more pictures – I honestly hadn’t shot a picture for me since October, actually learning my school work and not just blasting through it to get the marks, spend more quality time with people who matter. There are no surprises here. Honestly I wrote out a list of goals and posted them on the blog at New Years. My point in this long rant is that it is what you do daily which determines what you will able to do when the time comes.
As I have asked before at the end of other posts what dream are you chasing. Don’t feel like you need to share it for the world to see but I do strongly encourage you to look at your daily routine and see if it will lead to your goals and dreams. Go ahead chase the dream in your heart. The adventure is worth it.

A comic by my friend
You should check out this comic by my friend Brandon. http://www.twxxd.com/?p=473 It is a twist on my ranting about that stupid fence in front of the flame. Enjoy.
Anticipation
You know that feeling of waking up 2 hours before you are allowed to wake up your family on Christmas morning (house rule can’t wake up everyone till 7) and the excitement you have waiting. Well today I am off to Whistler and Bobsledding. I have been waiting for this moment since i acquired the tickets.
And Canada has 2 shots at being on the podium today. Yippee.
OTP
Own the podium is a success in my mind. Yes we wont beat the Americans in the medal count. We may not even beat our medal count from 4 years ago.
The success is that we as a nation are talking about winning medals at these games. In the past it has been surprising when we have medaled. In these games we are expecting medals. Our athletes are getting more the personal bests they are getting top 10 top 5 finishes. Our overall performance is greater then in the past. You can’t just look at medals but look at overall standings. If we didn’t lose half the women’s skiing program to injuries three months before the games we would be sitting with more medals. They had been projected to win 7 themselves.
However I believe that the success of Own the Podium is not the medal count but how Canadians have engaged these games. Record viewership something like 93% of Canadians have watched the games at some point. The crowds to get in to the pavilions are bigger then any one had predicted. The fact there is a conversation going on about what is Canadian Identity should be attributed to Own the Podium. I am one who would argue that the funding should increase or at least continue. Yes there are many things money should go towards, but encouraging people to live a more health life style and pursue something bigger then themselves is important.
Also look in to the stories of our medal winner. Everyone has a story. Some examples snowboarding for your brother, skating together since you were 7, skating for your mom, an auctioneer who wants to represent Canada at the games he will do anything, or know these are your last games winter and summer and win a bronze which is as good as gold. You don’t have to compete at the Olympics to chase your dreams. All of us have stories from our own lives that if told while winning a medal at the Olympics would be inspiring. So really what is stopping you from stepping out of what you are familiar with and chasing a dream or too.
So yeah in my opinion we should continue with Own the Podium.
One of Greatest
I must say I am not sure how I will cope with going back to “normal” life. Today I met one of the greatest hockey players ever. Mr. Gordie Howe.
Today was a planned light day. Go for lunch at Flying Wedge, on Ryan’s recommendations. Top pizza I have ever been able to buy by the slice. It was amazing. I recommend every one come to Vancouver and have a slice of it. Best pizza ever still is Chicago style from Gino’s in Chicago. But this was a good slice today. I was planning on going to look at the Flame for a bit afterwards. I decided after some thought that I should pack it in for the day because I am fighting a slight cold and knew standing in the rain more then was needed would help a lot.
I started making my way to the Shoppers Drugmart downtown to by some cold stuff. I figured might as well stop at London Drugs and hope it was on sale more then my discount would be at the other drug store. Getting there I saw a sign saying the Gordie Howe autograph session had been moved. What Gordie Howe Session????? I asked the clerk where was the other location. 3 blocks north of China Town/ Stadium Station. That was only one more station down the line. Jumping on the skytrain I was off in pursuit of Gordie (forgetting completely I was looking for cold medicine) I stopped and asked for directions, I have gotten tired of getting lost when I can just ask for directions in the first place. The transit guy was like “Gordie is signing autographs, NO WAY!!!!” I found the London Drugs and joined the “queue”.
And with that I have an autographed photo of Gordie and a photo with him. I must admit I was nervous getting the employee to take my photo with Gordie as I have been to autograph sessions and had the photo messed up (the Bret Hart signing in London, with Daryl). This time the photo went with out incident.
These Eyes
Finally I got to see Burton Cummings. It was well worth the wait. I tried to see him at the JLC in June of 2006 but things just didn’t work then to see him.
He is the definitive Canadian Rock ICON. His songs are known by everybody. Being a member of the Guess Who he wrote a lot of great songs.
As par for the course I needed to be as close as possible to the action. I bounced around about 8 seats on the floor before I found one that somebody else didn’t want to sit in. During this i was talking with Ashley about moving around trying to find the ideal seat. I told her good night and that I had finally got a seat 2nd row for the show. I then moved in to a seat in the front row and was content to listen to the show from there. As I sat there I thought a week and a half a go I got in front of the stage 2 people deep from BNL why in the world would I not do that for Backman.
So here we ago another attempt to get to a spot that is tough to get to. Apparently security isn’t as tight for Burton as it was for BNL. Those fools they just go on up. Well I worked my way through the crowd and got to 3 people back from the rail. Not to bad for a mid concert move. He played the classics These Eyes, American Woman, Stand Tall. It was a heck of a show. Oh and caught a pick from his guitarist. Getting good at that.
WOW
What a day!!!
We beat the Russians, we beat the Russians, we beat the Russians. The game was amazing. We simply out scored the Russians. The city is electric. Robson Square is full of people waving flags, singing O Canada and making noise. High fives all around. I walked down the street with some fans who were blowing a horn as I added the required amount of cow bell. I really can’t describe how alive the city has become.
Canada also got a several medals today a gold, 2 silvers and a bronze. We should be proud of all our athletes during the games. All sports need us to stand up and cheer for them with this level of enthusiasm not just our men’s hockey team. Like I said though a good couple of days the last few. The city has a greater buzz about then it has through out the games.
This is some helpful stuff when cheering for Canadian Hockey:
a Canadian Flag which has traveled in your back pack on a mission trip to Philly/DC and everywhere you have gone since then
a pair of red mittens which were bought off ebay because you couldn’t find a pair
a Canada Scarf a Christmas gift from the Browns to celebrate coming to the games to chase a dream
a toque made from a hockey sock, which you one shooting targets at Hockey House
a Cow Bell which makes a great noise and has been a star of this blog
and of course a Crosby Jersey that you bought from someone from Red Deer,AB via Kijji and had it mailed express to you so you can wear it tonite
Here I am about to board the skytrain. As you can see I have all the required tools to cheer on Canada. If you look for my hat I made the evening ctv news on the top right hand corner of the screen. Ok just my hat did but it counts.
What is Canadian?
Do you remember Joe from Canada? He was the star of a commercial back during the early 2000s that really brought about a sense of national pride.
Earlier in the blog I commented on that this moment would be my generations 1972, 1987 our defining sports moment. I am now wondering if this is something more then a sports moment but our Canadian moment. The pride is swelling in the streets. People break in to the anthem randomly. I don’t know if it is just a Vancouver thing but you see Canadian flags every where. We may be multicultural but I have seen that red and white on everyone. People are talking about what it means to be Canadian. I am going to head downtown wearing my new Crosby Jersey and join the crowd who will watch as we take on the Russians.
But what does it mean to be Canadian? I am interested in hearing your thoughts and I will post mine after the game.
Sweep HARD, HARD HARD!!!
If you have ever felt the thrill of throwing a 40lbs rock down a sheet of freshly prepaid ice and yelling “SWEEP HARD” to make that rock change direction then you know the sheer exhilaration which is curling.
To any one who finds this sport boring you most have never have thrown a rock yourself. This game rocks! I played for a bit in highschool and it was some of favorite memories came from it. My roommate, Adam, and I use to play together back then. We were never olympic calibre but we had a lot of fun.
I read an article about how curling has been evolving since the 1998 return to the Olympics. The fans are louder and more in to the game then before. Yesterday I saw two guys wearing just their boxers painted from head to toe in red and white to support Canada. This use to be saved for college football not curling. Those 5000 fans were in to the games. Everyone was fixed on the Canadian sheet but everyone ooohed and ayyyed when there was a tight shot on any sheet. Going in to extra ends you brought about even more excitement when the Canadians won.
I highly recommend everyone should go throw a rock to be a part of this great culture of curlers or at the least rent “Men with Brooms” a Paul Grose film it will sweep you off your feet.
Party Central, EH?
The best place to party during the games is Holland House. Since 1992 in Barcelona Holland House has been where it is at. In Vancouver it had trouble finding a place to stay until Richmond stepped up and said you can party over here. I had heard a few times through out my time here that you need to see it. Yesterday afternoon the line wasn’t to bad to get in so I thought why not.
Now first thing though while I was thinking about “queueing” as all the signs call it (ie lining up) Canada was 4 races away from Gold in Women’s Ski Cross. I decided seeing us potential win Gold made more sense then standing in the rain to get in. I found a covered area that using the camera fully zoomed out I could see a screen across a foot ball field and watch the races. I gave updates on which colour jersey we were wearing to the guy and his two kids beside me. The races got closer and closer. Ok final 4. Here we go. CANADA WINS GOLD so said Ashley via text. Maybe own the podium was not going to be medal count just number of times we win GOLD. Then I preceded to go join the queue.
I will say the Dutch House was definitely more elaborate then many of the others I had been too. Their food was cheaper as well. You could see a lot of cool things in there and orange was definitely every where. I found a perfect seat in a penalty box to see the screens to watch the hockey games. I text Brandon to tell him about the place. I knew this was going to be the place to watch the game. Some guy was on the screen talking, no clue what he was saying cause it was in dutch. The place seemed to come down a bit in its fun atmosphere. Meh, I am at the heart of energy this will be good. (Turns out the superstar Dutch athlete just got DQ because of a coaching error and missed out on a World Record and Olympic Gold). I thought it 4:30 shouldn’t there be Pierre Migquerre’s stupid comments now before the game. I ask a waiter when they are switching over to the hockey game. I am sorry we only cover events the dutch are competing in. WHAT!!! You are a glorified sports bar in Canada and you aren’t going to show hockey on 1 of your 3 big screens. Where am I going to find a place to watch the game with atmosphere with 5 mins till game time. Well I just watched the women’s ski cross outside they most have the game on outside.
I moved outside and found a spot in the bleacher that was sort of out of the rain and you could see the game. There was like 4 other people spread over this football blechers watching the game. I thought “okay no audio, its cold, and I am getting rained on, I could go back to the library I was at earlier today they said they would have the game on. But who wants to watch a game where you have to be quite and can’t use your cow bell. Well audio, chairs, warm out weighed where I was. Off to the library I go.
Get in there decent size tv, got to sit on a couch and they were giving out free popcorn. This was definitely a different experience watching hockey then any I have had before. It was like a living room with a few people you don’t really know but you are cheering for the same team so it is all good. I had thought what happens when Canada scores. Am I really aloud to ring a cowbell in a library. Ah well I will get at least one warning before they kick me out so lets just wait for the scoring to start. Local boy Joe Thornton SCORES! There is no way I am not ringing a cow bell for this. Cling Clank Cling clank!!!!! People watching the game are now cheering as well. I guess everyone was thinking are we aloud to cheer loud in a library. I am glad I opened up that freedom via the cow bell. The guy to the front of me said don’t stop, we need more cow bell and smiled. If you have ever seen the SNL skit about Needing More Cow Bell you would understand. Anyways watch the whole game there with a few people I saw standing in line from Holland House. Never thought a library would be a more happening place then Holland Heinken House.
Olympic Spirit
This is Debbie and her friend. Debbie lives near the curling rink.
Today and most days they sell really delicious cookies, (freshly made warm) on the path from the rink to the skytrain. Since I skipped breakfast, I thought a bag of cookies sounds very good. As I ate my cookies I talked to Debbie about what it is she does. Turns out she does this for her two kids to get a chance to say hi to us visitors to this great city. Her kids love talking to all the people who are coming from the curling and learning about where they are from. I told Debbie about chasingdreams.ca and how I came to experience the Games. She pointed to her jacket which read 88 Calgary and said she did that too years ago. I left her a few pins for the kids and went on my way glad to see that the games legacy will be those memories the kids have when the world came to thier doorstep.
Golden
The city is back to the energy level it had been at before. We are GOLDEN again. O Canada is being song in the streets again.
The other day I talked about Local Matters. I want to brag about my neck of the woods.
Tessa Virtue, Scott Moir, Christine Nesbitt, Drew Doughty, Joe Thornton
just to mention a few people who are from home that are making it big at the games. Anyways I can’t describe what it was like to watch Virtue and Moir win there gold outside the CTV Robson st studio. The crowd singing the anthem. It’s been a long day and watching the women’s curling Canada vs Great Brittain tomorrow which is going to rock. Get it “rock”. Curling. Come on it was funny.
I enjoyed tonight
So before you think I am simply just spinning, let me explain.
Last week an old high school friend messaged me via facebook and asked where about was I in town. He had seen one of my random posts of being at the games. Well this afternoon I decided that I wanted to watch the game with somebody I knew versus the random people at Ontario House. I texted Mike and asked what he was up to for the game. He then called me and asked how well I knew the skytrain system (I haven’t gotten lost that many times). We arranged to meet at a Boston Pizza. It was good to see a friend and watch the game with him. The game may have not finished the way we wanted but the time was well spent.
As for my mention spin, well there will be a lot the next few days. This will give the team another game to find chemistry (four sharks, three ducks, 3 blackhawks, 2 dman who won a cup together), no one since early 90s have won the pool and the gold, make the team more determined is all hog wash. No one other the Bob McKenzie was saying that this morning. This was a let down. It is not the end of the world that Canada lost tonight but please let’s not spin that it was a good thing they lost.
Any ways I am watching Sweden vs Finland right now and then send off some photos and plan the rest of the week. It will be a good week for sure capped off with a Men’s and Women’s Gold in Hockey for Canada.
